This was at the lower end of the pond which was known as Captain's Pond. The picture was taken August 31, 1881. From this pond Captain Abraham Washburn in 1829 dug a canal some 50 rods long, turned the stream into a valley and constructed a dam with 20 feet full of water. The pond now known as Jones Pond came into being.
