Getting a Library Card

A library card is required to check out materials.

  • You must be a Massachusetts resident to obtain a library card. 
  • To obtain a library card, apply in person at the library and present identification showing your name and current address.
  • Children who can print their first name or are at least 5 years old may have their own library card.
  • Your library PIN/Password is usually the last four digits of your phone number.

  • Please inform the library as soon as possible if you have lost your library card or there is a change to your contact information.
  • Click here to register for a temporary library card to be able to place holds and access eBooks and eAudiobooks immediately.

Register now for an eCard. Your eCard becomes active immediately and allows you to:

  • place up to five holds in the SAILS catalog
  • get into the online magazines & newspapers
  • check out and download Overdrive books & music

You may also be able to access electronic resources available through your local SAILS library.

You are eligible for an eCard if you:

  • live in Massachusetts
  • are 13 years of age or older (teens between 13 and 15 must supply the email address of a parent or guardian)
  • do not already have a card through a SAILS library

eCards may be upgraded to physical library cards at any SAILS library. If you are under 18, you may need to have a parent or legal guardian co-sign your registration when you pick up your physical card. Please contact your hometown library for further information on specific registration policies.

Register now for an eCard.

You are eligible for an eCard if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Your primary residence is in Massachusetts.
  • You are living in Massachusetts for most of the year while attending school in-state.
  • You work for a Massachusetts employer.
  • You own a real-estate property in Massachusetts.

 

Other Restrictions

If you already have a BPL library card, you are not eligible for a new eCard.

If you have an expired physical card, you may apply for a new eCard.

If you have an expired eCard, you can renew it by filling our eCard renewal form.
